Corsair Deploys PhonePrint for Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile; RF fingerprinting system will attack cellular fraud in A-side markets nationwide.

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1996--Corsair Communications announced today that Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile will deploy Corsair's PhonePrint cellular fraud prevention system in several of its cellular markets across the country.

The radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting system will protect Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile customers from cloning within their local service areas as well as in a number of the nation's largest roaming markets. Installation of the system began two months ago in Connecticut and will continue in the carrier's A-side markets nationwide later this year.

Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile executive vice president and chief technical officer Dick Lynch remarked that PhonePrint will protect the company's customers as the cellular fraud problem spreads beyond the large urban markets where it has historically been most prevalent. "There are many factors pushing fraud -- especially roaming fraud -- out from the cities," said Lynch. "It's important that we use the latest technological advances to stop it at our doorstep, which is what PhonePrint will do."

Corsair president and CEO Mary Ann Byrnes emphasized that PhonePrint already provides protection for a significant portion of cellular subscribers nationwide. "We now have a large presence in the Northeast, Midwest, and Southwest, including such markets as Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, and Washington," said Byrnes. "That presence is growing daily, and Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile will benefit in every region where we deploy. Essentially, they are adding two levels of protection with PhonePrint -- local and roaming protection -- and they're strengthening the roaming benefit for other carriers as well."

PhonePrint uses a signal intelligence technology known as radio frequency fingerprinting to detect subtle differences between the radio signals broadcast by different cellular phones. When the system spots a clone, it immediately disconnects the call. PhonePrint has reduced fraud by as much as 90 percent in markets where it is deployed.
