PhoneCheck, a software application on Corsair's PhonePrint(R) fraud prevention system platform, is a centralized monitoring system that identifies poorly performing phones and their subscribers, who may be at risk of churn. L.A. Cellular is adopting the system after a successful trial in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The carrier is the first to implement PhoneCheck.

"PhoneCheck is unique in that it allows us to see into the side of our network that we have little control over -- our subscribers' phones," said Steve Fowler Steve Fowler is currently group editor of What Car? which includes the magazines What Car?, What Car? New Car Guide, What Car? Price Guide and the website whatcar.com. , vice president of customer care.

PhoneCheck allows wireless service providers to determine the health of their customer's cellular telephones, based on the quality of their transmitted signals. The carrier can then contact the affected customers and take the appropriate action to remedy the problem, usually before a customer has the chance to complain.

The application also enables customer service representatives to consult PhoneCheck information quickly as they answer customer-initiated calls.

During the trial, L.A. Cellular used PhoneCheck to identify and contact a test segment of over 1,000 subscribers at risk of churn because of poor quality phones. After six months of post-trial monitoring, L.A. Cellular has continued to observe significant churn reduction in this contact group as compared to a control group.

The trial also produced a significant reduction in incoming complaint calls to customer care by proactively correcting issues with poor quality phones before subscribers called to report an issue.
