Corry Publishing Chooses Okapi's ipXcelerator For Multi-Site Metropolitan-Area Data Protection Network; ipXcelerator Backs Up Three Locations, Thirteen Servers Over 20-Mile Span.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 2003

Corry Publishing (www.corrypub.com) in Erie, PA, publisher of technology magazines and buyers' and resource guides for IT managers and network professionals, is using the ipXcelerator(TM) from Okapi okapi (ōkăp`ē), nocturnal ruminant mammal, Okapia johnstoni, of the giraffe family. It inhabits the almost sunless rain forests of the upper Congo and feeds on leaves.  Software, Inc. (www.okapi-software.com) for direct D2D (Disk-to-Disk) Typically refers to backing up data on disks rather than on tape. Disk-to-disk backup systems provide a very fast restore capability compared with tape backup. See D2D2T and virtual tape.  backup as a cost-and-performance alternative to tape at its three locations in Erie, PA. San Diego-based Okapi Software is the leading developer of direct D2D2T (Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape) Refers to backing up data on disks first and tape (or optical disc) second. Backing up onto tape is performed at less frequent intervals than from disk to disk. See D2D and virtual tape. (TM) accelerated backup and business continuance solutions using iSCSI.

The ipXcelerator, installed at the Knowledge Park Data Center in Erie, is performing a 300GB backup every night on 13 servers in the Erie region. The publisher uses Backup Exec Backup Exec is backup software for Microsoft Windows environments currently developed by Symantec. Backup Exec has a long history of being sold from one company to another. (TM) software from VERITAS Software and an ATM backbone to connect the three sites and 13 servers in the metropolitan network's 20-mile span.

"Because of the ipXcelerator's 1.6TB capacity and high-performance D2D capability, we are now re-considering the need for a tape library," said Mr. Chris Loringer, CIO CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

at Corry Publishing since 1999. "A tape library is now a less critical component of our backup strategy," he said, "Our current three DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  tape drives and the ipXcelerator give us very robust system-wide backup."

The ipXcelerator was installed last month with on-site assistance by Okapi's founder and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  John Matze, one of the co-authors of the iSCSI standard. Loringer reports a "flawless and smooth" cutover (communications, networking) cutover - /cut-ov*/ Switching from an old (hardware and/or software) system to a replacement system, covering the overlap from when the new system is live until the old system has been shut down. : "The ipXcelerator just grabbed our IP addresses, configured itself to our Ethernet network and was ready to go."

Prior to the installation, Corry Publishing shared the common problems of many companies using tape backups, most notably the expense and logistics required to transport tape from multiple locations to remote storage vaults and, when necessary, retrieving them when restores are required. Loringer said the ipXcelerator has eliminated these problems. "With the ipXcelerator on-board, there is virtually no cost and no time penalty when restoring data to a downed server."

Under consideration is a second ipXcelerator costing less than $20,000 that would mirror the unit already installed, further eliminate the need to buy and manage a $100,000 tape library, and provide immediate and invisible "tape-like" restores in the event of a server's failure. In addition, the company expects to grow its server count from the current 13 to more than 25 before the end of the year.
