Corrie's gay kiss wins in ratings.
The veteran ITV soap won a 54.7 per cent share of Sunday night's telly audience with the episode which ended in Todd Grimshaw's pass at Nick Tilsley.
A spokeswoman for producers Granada said 16 viewers had complained about the pre-watershed kiss.
She said: ``The complaints were mainly from old-style Coronation Street viewers who maybe didn't want to see something like that.
``We get many more when somebody swears. But the scenewaswrittenandshot for a pre-watershed audience.''
She denied the scenes had been written to boost ratings after rival soap EastEnders bought Dirty Den back from the dead.
There will be an ongoing storyline involving Todd, played by Bruno Langley, 20, and Nick, played byAdam Rickett, 25. Todd is going out with Nick's sister, Sarah Lou.
The spokeswoman added: ``This is just the start . It's not a case of having a gay kiss just for titillation's sake.
``Todd will continue to struggle with his feelings, not for Nick, but general confusion over his sexuality.''
She added: ``The ratings werea little above average, so we are pleased.''
