Page 29: add 1 March entry: Space shuttle Columbia launched, rendezvoused and grappled the Hubble Space Telescope Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the first large optical orbiting observatory. Built from 1978 to 1990 at a cost of $1.5 billion, the HST (named for astronomer E. P. Hubble) was expected to provide the clearest view yet obtained of the universe. , then conducted five days of spacewalks to remove and replace parts and to add new equipment. The STS (Synchronous Transport Signal) The electrical equivalent of the SONET optical signal. In SDH, the European counterpart of SONET, STS is known as STM (Synchronous Transport Module).  109 misson was commanded by Naval Aviator Capt. Scott Altman.
