Corrections Opens Toll-Free Line for Crime Victims.

, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 1998--The California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Department of Corrections has launched a new toll-free line for victims of crime as part of the Department's increased emphasis on victims' rights victims' rights, rights of victims to have a role in the prosecution of the perpetrators of crimes against them. Nearly all U.S. states have enacted some victims' rights legislation.  and services.

Victims seeking help from Corrections can now call the following number free of charge: 1-888-562-5874.

Crime victims and their families can request help from the Department with the following activities: -0-

--   Notification when an inmate dies, is released or escapes
--   Notification of Board of Prison Terms' hearings
--   Assistance with placing special conditions of parole on inmates
     about to be released from prison
--   Aid if the victim is being threatened or harassed by an inmate or
     parolee
--   Assistance with collecting restitution
--   Referrals to appropriate victim service providers and
     organizations

As part of the Department's expanded role in crime victims programs, the Office of Victims Services and Restitution In the context of Criminal Law, state programs under which an offender is required, as a condition of his or her sentence, to repay money or donate services to the victim or society; with respect to maritime law, the restoration of articles lost by jettison, done when the  has recently been elevated within the organization and placed directly under the Director's Office.

In the ten years since Corrections established its program to help victims of crime, the Department's Office of Victims Services has helped thousands of crime victims and collected more than $17 million in restitution fines. The restitution fines, which are imposed by a judge at sentencing, are general fines that go to the Board of Control for disbursement DISBURSEMENT. Literally, to take money out of a purse. Figuratively, to pay out money; to expend money; and sometimes it signifies to advance money.

A new program launched last month allows Corrections to collect direct restitution orders from inmates. These are direct orders from a judge that require an inmate INMATE. The Department will now be able to collect money from an inmates' wages or trust fund account and send the collection to the Board of Control for direct disbursement to the victim.

The Department of Corrections will be joining a number of other state agencies in promoting greater awareness of victims rights during the week of April 19-25, which Governor Wilson has declared as Victims' Rights Week in California.
