In our last issue (Vol 15 No 5), we referred to the `settling of the bloody conflict in Bougainville Bougainville (b`gənvĭl, Fr. bgăNvēl`), volcanic island (1990 est. pop. 154,000), c. , after the Papua Papua, province, Indonesia
Papua (păp`ə, –y
 New Guinean island seceded'. As made clear opposite, Bougainville is an autonomous province of PNG (Portable Network Graphics) A bitmapped graphics file format endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium. It is expected to eventually replace the GIF format, because there are lingering legal problems with GIFs. , and has not seceded.
