Corps taking comments on Fern Ridge Lake plan.

Byline: The Register-Guard

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking public comments on its plan to keep Fern Ridge Lake lower than normal for a year or longer because of a problem at the dam.

The plan is intended to help the agency investigate and repair the 62-year-old dam's failing internal drain system. But the lower water level may have a negative effect on wetland and aquatic species, wetland habitat and sailboating, corps officials say.

The agency proposes to stop filling the reservoir when the water level reaches 371 feet above sea level. That's 2 1/2 feet below "full conservation pool."

The restriction will remain in effect until further investigations show more favorable fa·vor·a·ble

Also, reservoir depths in late summer probably would not allow for deep-draft sailboats to tie up at the marinas, Dasso said.

Comments on the corps' environmental assessment of its lower water level plan are due by Dec. 15.
