She warns that some of the work - weeding, for example - can be boring, and all of it is physical.

Trail construction means digging out brush and debris to create a level hiking path a couple of feet wide. Maintaining already-built trails means cutting out overhanging brush, and clearing rocks and downed trees, Harris said.

"It's very hard work," she said. "We do try to build up to the harder stuff."

But there's a reward for all that effort in the form of bragging rights.

"They like to do things that they can go back and show folks - reconstructing a pump house, reconstructing signs, working on trails - even though it's hard, they feel like they're accomplishing something worthwhile," she said.

There's also an opportunity to job shadow ranger district employees.

Harris, for example, took some teens out to do butterfly surveys in a meadow last year.

"They got a kick out of that," she said.
