Corps of Engineers Prepares for Hurricane Rita with Advanced Contracting Initiatives.

), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing for the potential impacts of Hurricane Rita Hurricane Rita was the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the Gulf of Mexico. Rita caused $11.3 billion in damage on the U.S. Gulf Coast in September 2005. , by pre-positioning personnel and equipment. The Corps is continuing to closely monitor the path of the upcoming storm.

The Corps has changed the way it contracts for Ice, Water, Debris Removal/Reduction, Temporary Power, and Temporary Roofing to support a natural or man-made disaster man-made disaster Technological disaster Public health An event in which a significant number of people are injured or die as a result of human devices or activities, unrelated to conflicts, and attributed to operator error–eg, Exxon Valdez . Previously, contracts were awarded after an emergency or disaster occurred, delaying response time to emergencies/disasters.

" contracts, were developed and put in place by the Corps of Engineers, Readiness Support Center, in conjunction with assigned lead Corps Divisions and Districts. They include Requirement Contracts for Ice and Water and Requirement Contracts with Indefinite Delivery -- Indefinite Quantity options for Debris Removal/ Reduction, Temporary Power and Temporary Roofing. These competitively awarded contracts will be in effect until November 2007, with the exception of the Ice contract which will expire in November 2005.

 Worldwide Services is prepared to deliver ice and temporary power, D & J Enterprises has the debris removal mission and Lipsey Mountain Spring Water Co. has the water delivery mission.
