Corps Reports That Lakes/Levees Holding up to Heavy Rains.FORT WORTH, Texas -- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials with the Fort Worth District are continuing their vigilance of lakes and levees. The heavy rains around the city of Cameron have caused the Little River to jump its banks. To minimize the flooding downstream, the flood gates at Granger, Belton and Stillhouse Lakes were closed Thursday. The elevation at Whitney peaked at 558 feet early today and is falling. Elevation was at 556.77 feet at 11 a.m. today. Following are releases as of 8 a.m. today: [TABLE OMITTED] At Proctor Lake, located in Comanche County on the Leon River, 11 areas of the dam have been identified to require repairs and additional monitoring. Inspections by dam safety specialists from the District office indicate that, while there is some concern, there is no danger of a dam failure. Continual monitoring and repairs on the dam will ensure its structural integrity. In Dallas, 13 shallow slides have been spotted on the levees on the Trinity River ranging from 90 to 170 feet in length and 5 to 10 feet deep. Because of drought conditions over the past two years, the compacted clays in the levees are dry and cracked. When those cracks become filled with water, slides often result. Because of the soil types and highly variable weather patterns in the Dallas area, shallow slides are a common occurrence, so these slides are not considered a cause for concern at this time. Repairs will be made as soon as weather conditions permit and the Corps is working with the city to conduct daily inspections of levees especially following heavy downpours. Although most Corps lakes continue to rise, all are operating as designed and all dams are structurally sound.
