Corporate philanthropy: ranked by cash donations to L.A. county charities.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE Business Journal compiled a list of the largest corporate givers ranked by cash donated to L.A. County charities. Wells Fargo tops the list, followed by Oakland-based health care provider Kaiser Permanente. Five financial institutions provided information for this year's list. Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America contributed $200 million in cash to charities worldwide last year, of which $6.7 million went to local organizations. Some companies donate money directly to organizations through corporate giving programs. Others donate through a legally established corporate foundation that is operated by the company. Many companies establish foundations for specific giving programs and make donations through a combination of both types of giving. Additionally, other philanthropic efforts not measured include in-kind donations of products and volunteer efforts by employees. The Business Journal surveyed more than 100 companies for this list, although most companies declined to provide information on cash donations. Those companies include the two largest companies headquartered locally: Burbank-based Walt Disney Co. and Thousand Oaks-based Amgen Inc. THE PACESETTER WELLS FARGO WELLS Fargo tops this year's list of the largest corporate philanthropists ranked by cash donations to charities in L.A. County. The San Francisco-based bank donated more than $12 million in cash to locally based charities during 2006. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] "We've donated more than $10 million annually in this community for the past five years," said Jonathan Weedman, Wells Fargo Foundation regional vice president. The bank's philanthropic activities extend beyond cash giving. Wells Fargo employees are encouraged to engage the community by serving on the boards of non-profit organizations and other committees. Some employees have taken on positions that require a significant time commitment. For example, Don Fracchia serves as chairman for Project Angel Food. "Many non-profits need experienced bankers on their boards to help them understand how to get access to capital," said Weedman. Wells Fargo has even created a program called "Volunteer for Leave" that allows more than a dozen employees to take up to four months leave with pay to work for a non-profit organization. The company emphasizes working in low-income communities. It focuses its philanthropic efforts around education, jobs, affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization.
