Company description: Weiner's Stores Inc. is a neighborhood family retailer of branded products for value-conscious customers. The Company operates 133 stores primarily in strip shopping centers in Texas and Louisiana, and has over 3,600 employees. Sales exceeded $263 million in fiscal 1997. Based on its ongoing demographic analysis and market research, the Company believes its customer base is approximately 45% Hispanic, 35% African-American and 20% Other, with household income averaging $30,000 or less. The Company has laid out marketing strategies and new store locations targeting the demographic features of its customer base. These features include ethnicity, value-conscious female shoppers with more than one child in the home and fashion-oriented young adult males. The Company strategically opens stores in lower to lower-middle income neighborhoods to create a dominant neighborhood presence for its customer base. The Company's retailing strategy is intended to enhance its ability to compete effectively with off-price retailers, specialty stores, discount stores and department stores. The Company believes its strategies better enable it to understand the needs and priorities of its customer base, provide more complete assortments than off-price retailers, sell quality branded merchandise not available in discount stores and provide convenience and better pricing than department stores. |
