Company description: The United Illuminating The United Illuminating Holdings Corporation (UI) is an electricity distributor for southern Connecticut. It currently serves roughly 320,000 customers in 17 municipalities in the Greater Bridgeport, New Haven, and Lower Naugatuck Valley regions.  Co., headquartered in New Haven New Haven, city (1990 pop. 130,474), New Haven co., S Conn., a port of entry where the Quinnipiac and other small rivers enter Long Island Sound; inc. 1784. Firearms and ammunition, clocks and watches, tools, rubber and paper products, and textiles are among the many , CT, is an investor-owned electric utility incorporated under the laws of the state in 1899.

It is engaged principally in the production, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity for residential, commercial and industrial purposes in a service area of about 335 square miles in the southern part of Connecticut. The population of this area is approximately 704,000 or 21 percent of Connecticut's population.

The service area, largely urban and suburban in character, includes the principal cities of Bridgeport and New Haven and their surrounding municipalities: Ansonia, Bridgeport, Derby, East Haven East Haven, town (1990 pop. 26,144), New Haven co., S Conn., on Long Island Sound, a residential suburb of New Haven, in a farm area; inc. 1785. Light industry, distribution and warehousing, electronics, and insurance and investment firms are important. , Easton, Fairfield, Hamden, Milford, New Haven, North Branford North Branford, town (1990 pop. 12,996), New Haven co., S Conn., on the Branford River; settled c.1680, inc. 1831. A large traprock quarry is there, as is some light industry. , North Haven North Haven, town (1990 pop. 22,249), New Haven co., S Conn., on the Quinnipiac River; settled c.1650, set off from New Haven 1786. Chiefly residential, it has some manufactures, such as aircraft parts, tools, chemicals, and machinery. , Orange, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, West Haven and Woodbridge.
