Plasmon Data, Inc. was founded in 1985 as the U.S. marketing, sales and technical support arm of the Plasmon Group, a worldwide manufacturer of optical jukeboxes See optical disc library. , CD-Recorders and media.

The Plasmon Group includes manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and in the U.K., with sales offices in the U.K., France, Germany and the U.S. The company has sales revenues of approximately $45M and employs 150.

Today, Plasmon offers a comprehensive range of 5 1/4-inch optical storage solutions from single drives with capacities of up to 2.6GB to 670GB optical disk jukeboxes. System options for the 5 1/4-inch products include software support for all major platforms, the use of both WORM and rewritable media and the NetReady(TM) module which converts a jukebox A storage device for multiple sets of CD-ROMs, DVDs, tape cartridges or disk modules. Using carousels, robot arms and other methods, a jukebox physically moves the storage medium from its assigned location to an optical or magnetic station for reading and writing.  to a high capacity server. Applications include document and image storage and retrieval, mass data archive and video server.

Plasmon also manufactures a new line of affordable CD-Recorders and PD/CD solutions, which are targeted at professional users. Primary applications for CD-Recorders are document publishing, software distribution, premastering, data archival, secure data transfer and multimedia applications, including audio, video and interactive titles/discs.

PD/CD solutions, which provide 4X CD-ROM drives CD-ROM drives, which today typically means a CD-RW drive that is a combo CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW drive, come in a variety of speeds. The original drive (1x) transferred data at 150KB per second.  plus 650MB rewritable optical storage in a single housing, are ideally suited for low cost daily backup, data transfer and multimedia presentations. Plasmon manufactures a wide range of optical disks including advanced phase-change rewritable and long-life WORM media. These high quality products are manufactured to ISO (1) See ISO speed.
