Photodynamic treatments work as follows: Patients are injected with a specially formulated, synthetic drug that accumulates in rapidly dividing cells such as a cancer tumor. A low-power light is then directed at the treatment site, starting a photochemical reaction that destroys the abnormal, drug-saturated cells with minimal effect to normal tissues.

PDT, one of a few companies in the world specializing in the field of photodynamic therapy, is conducting clinical and preclinical testing of its drugs and devices in cancer and non-cancer diseases. The company has achieved, through licensing arrangements and through its own development programs, a significant foundation of proprietary products.

PDT is preparing for commercialization of its drugs and devices through collaborative agreements with leading medical companies such as Pharmacia, Boston Scientific Corp. and Cordis Corp.
