Technology Inc. was founded for the express purpose of developing large area microlithographic equipment for the volume production of active matrix liquid crystal display liquid crystal display (LCD)

Incorporated in 1986, MRS has been involved since that time in the development, manufacture and distribution of their breakthrough microlithography system, the PanelPrinter (tm), which is designed specifically to mass produce AMLCD efficiently. As one of only three manufacturers of projection microlithography systems for large-area AMLCD production, MRS has captured a significant portion of a growing market.

MRS derives revenue from two sources: sales of the PanelPrinter, and from contract research with commercial customers and governmental agencies interested in fostering the development of flat panel display A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  (FPD (1) (Flat Panel Display) See LCD, plasma display, EL display, FED and flat panel display.
