ArtStart is the social business venture of Central City
Hospitality House, an agency that has been working with homeless and
low income individuals in San Francisco since 1967. The guiding
mission of ArtStart is to conduct a self-sustaining enterprise which
creates income-generating opportunities for homeless and low-income
people by marketing the artwork they produce.
Located in downtown San Francisco's Crocker Galleria, the
Hospitality House Shop and Gallery consigns, promotes and sells
artwork created by participants in the Tenderloin art studio of their
Community Arts Program. The artwork includes paintings, pottery and
sculpture. The store provides jobs for participants and pays a 60%
commission on all artwork sold.
Another economic development activity of ArtStart is a line of
holiday greeting cards designed, produced and distributed by our
participants. The cards are silk-screened or offset, and of high
quality. We market our cards through our retail store, a mail order
brochure and an on-line gallery located on our website at
www.artstart@hospitalityhouse.org.
ArtStart hires participants from our programs and shelters to
take responsibility for all aspects of producing and selling these
cards. ArtStart employees master a flexible range of skills needed
in the technological, fast-changing job market: team goals, superior
customer service and quality products.
