Company description: Extempo Systems Inc. designs and builds synthetic actors for incorporation into interactive products for entertainment, education and business. Extempo's software provides the "brains" for computer characters represented in different embodiments (e.g. graphics, animation, virtual reality, text, robots). Extempo's actors engage in intelligent and surprising improvisational behavior appropriate to the application context in which they appear, guided by their personality, mood and real-time directions from the user or other programs. Extempo is the first company to develop a software architecture, development tools, and a run-time engine for directable, improvisational characters.

History:

Extempo was founded by Dr. Barbara Hayes-Roth and was incorporated as a California C Corporation in September 1995. Dr. Hayes-Roth also serves as Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president. . Extempo's synthetic actor technology is based on over a decade of government-sponsored R&D on intelligent agents performed at Stanford by Dr. Hayes-Roth and her staff. The intelligent agent software has been used at Stanford and by corporate affiliates in industrial, medical and education applications.

Extempo has extended this public domain technology and adapted it for use in synthetic actor applications for consumer software and other interactive products. Extempo owns all rights to this intellectual property and has filed for patent protection of the method and system for directed improvisation improvisation
