Company description: Eastern Enterprises owns and operates Boston Gas Co., New England's largest distributor of natural gas, serving more than 515,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Boston and 73 other eastern and central Massachusetts communities, and Midland Enterprises Inc., the leading carrier of coal and a major carrier of other dray bulk cargoes on the nation's inland waterways, with a fleet of 2,450 barges and 88 towboats. Eastern also owns a 50 percent interest in AllEnergy Marketing Co., L.L.C., an unregulated energy marketing company, through a joint venture with New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  Electric. AllEnergy, headquartered in Waltham, Mass., will provide a comprehensive array of energy commodities and related products and services to customers throughout the Northeast.

For the first nine months of 1996, Eastern's earnings of $43.5 million, or $2.13 per share, increased 24 percent and 23 percent, respectively, over the comparable period in 1995.
