Industry: Non-hazardous solid waste management

Company description: Founded in 1988 and public since September 1993, Continental Waste Industries Inc. provides integrated solid waste management services, including non-hazardous waste collection, transfer, recycling and disposal services to approximately 175,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers primarily in the Mid-West/Mid-South regions of the country. The company recently completed a secondary offering which raised in excess of $30 million, most of which is designated for acquisitions.

The company has made 27 separate acquisitions since its founding, and has recently entered a stage of accelerating growth, expanding its national markets into the Carolinas and its international operations into Costa Rica and Mexico. Continental's growth strategy is based on a disciplined "hub-and-spoke" system which involves acquiring or developing a landfill and then supporting that landfill with "tuck-in" acquisitions of hauling and transfer operations in the same or adjacent markets. As a result of this strategy, the company is able to dispose over 90% of the volumes it collects at company-owned landfills.

Continental is headquartered in Clark, N.J., and has executive offices throughout its various market regions. It owns and operates a total of nine landfills, nine waste collection operations, 14 transfer stations and three municipal recycling facilities. The company has approximately 750 employees.
