Company description: Beacon Diagnostics, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets diagnostic products using platform technologies that enable the rapid detection of antibodies and antigens in noninvasive specimens (i.e., saliva, urine, etc.). The company's lead product, OraScreen(TM) HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  Rapid Test, is a simple, multi-step dipstick dipstick /dipĀ·stick/ (dipĀ“stik) a strip of cellulose chemically impregnated to render it sensitive to protein, glucose, or other substances in the urine.  system for detection of antibodies to HIV in saliva.

The test can be performed in the physician's office or at home in 15 minutes, without the need for technical training, instruments or a laboratory. Beacon has already begun production for international distribution and expects to file an investigational device exemption An Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) allows the investigational device to be used in a clinical study in order to collect safety and effectiveness data required to support a Premarket Approval (PMA) application or a Premarket Notification [510(k)] submission to Food and  (IDE) with the Food and Drug Administration in early 1997 to begin clinical trials in the U.S.

The company is also developing other innovative point-of-care technologies for use in additional rapid saliva tests for hepatitis and gastrointestinal, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers.

Beacon was formed in 1991 and immediately obtained exclusive worldwide rights to certain technologies that emerged from research programs at the University of Florida University of Florida is the third-largest university in the United States, with 50,912 students (as of Fall 2006) and has the eighth-largest budget (nearly $1.9 billion per year).
