BMI was founded in 1940 as a non-profit making corporation to open the door to performing rights representation for songwriters and composers of all types of music, many of whom were not eligible under the membership guidelines of the older American performing rights societies. BMI offered first time representation to songwriters of blues, jazz, R&B, gospel, folk, country, Spanish language and other types of American music. As several of these musical trends converged to produce a new music called "rock & roll," BMI became the preeminent performing rights organization representing songwriters of this new genre. The organization quickly made reciprocal agreements with sister performing right organizations around the world.

BMI's pop, rock, R&B, country and jazz repertoire is unparalleled. A listing of the Top 100 singles of the rock era by Rolling Stone magazine showed BMI represented 75% of the works. More than 75% of the inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a museum in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, dedicated to recording the history of some of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, and other people who have in some major way influenced the music industry, particularly in  are represented by BMI, as are more than 80% of the Country Music Hall of Fame inductees, and more than 90% of those honored with Pioneer Awards by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation.
