The concept is that users try a product, and if they like it, they voluntarily pay a set registration fee or make a donation to the program's creator. There are tens of thousands of shareware programs; some fantastic, some awful. . Shareware is commercial software consumers can try before they buy. Shareware can be found on bulletin board systems (BBSes), commercial online services, and through computer user groups. The ASP was founded in 1987 for five reasons: 1) To inform computer users about shareware programs and shareware as a way to market and distribute software; 2) To encourage broader distribution of shareware through user groups and disk dealers who agree to identify and explain the shareware concept; 3) To assist ASP members in marketing their software. 4) To provide a forum for ASP members to communicate, share ideas and learn; and 5) To foster a high degree of professionalism among shareware authors by setting programming, marketing and support standards.
