Corporate Development Department Announced At Large Scale Biology.

Large Scale Biology Corporation (Nasdaq:LSBC) today announced the formation of a Corporate Development Department to strengthen its business development, strategic business planning and commercial operations.

The company appointed Pieter C. Bax, Ph.D., MBA as Senior Vice President, Corporate Development; Guy della-Cioppa, Ph.D. as Vice President, Business Development; and Manfred Scholz, Ph.D. as Senior Director, Business Development.

"The productivity as well as the complexity of our varied research programs in all three of our facilities (Vacaville, CA; Germantown, MD; and Owensboro, KY) has caused us to multiply our business efforts significantly," said Robert L. Erwin, the company's chairman and CEO. The creation of a formal structure for corporate business development activities is expected to "amplify awareness of the LSBC technology portfolio and encourage new partnerships in all categories of our work," said Mr. Erwin.

Dr. Bax brings to LSBC more than 30 years of varied experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries related to corporate development, strategic planning and R&D management. The company anticipates that his pharmaceutical industry experience will be valuable to LSBC, as the company moves more toward becoming a product driven company, through strategic collaborations with partners employing its proteomics, functional genomics and GENEWARE (R) technology platforms.

Most recently, Dr. Bax served as Vice President of the Biopharmaceutical Development Division of SRI International, where he directed the pre-clinical development activities of new drug and vaccine candidates for infectious diseases and cancer. From 1992 to 1995, Dr. Bax served as Vice President, Business Development and Product Planning at Corvas International, a biotechnology company in San Diego. During the 1970's and 80's, he held various senior positions in corporate development, strategic development, licensing and R&D management at Syntex Corporation. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, and an MBA degree in finance from the University of Santa Clara.

Guy della-Cioppa, Ph.D., a twelve year veteran with the company, most recently served as Vice President, Genomics. In that capacity, he managed many projects, including the development and scale-up phase of the three-year collaboration and license agreement with The Dow Chemical Company and Dow AgroSciences LLC. In his new assignment, Dr. della-Cioppa will focus on establishing new alliances. The company anticipates that this will build upon Dr. della-Cioppa's extensive experience working with corporate partners and university laboratories on collaborative research projects, licensing, technology transfer and regulatory affairs. His doctoral degree in biology from UCLA was followed by study as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology and five years in various senior positions at Monsanto Company. He is a member of the Licensing Executives Society and recently completed executive education studies in financial analysis at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.

Manfred Scholz, Ph.D., MBA will be based at the company's Germantown, Maryland proteomics facility. Dr. Scholz joins LSBC from Boston Biomedical Consultants, Inc. where he specialized in strategic planning and market forecasting related to in vitro diagnostics, histopathology, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), genomics and proteomics segments. Previously he had been Technical Product Manager for Dade Behring Inc., responsible for global marketing for the immunoassay analyzer and reagent product lines. He received his doctoral and postdoctoral training at the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics and Harvard Medical School, respectively. In addition, he received an MBA degree from Babson College.
