) today announced the formation of a Corporate Development Department to strengthen its business development, strategic business planning and commercial operations.

"The productivity as well as the complexity of our varied research programs in all three of our facilities (Vacaville, CA; Germantown, MD; and Owensboro, KY) has caused us to multiply our business efforts significantly," said Robert L. Dr. Bax brings to LSBC more than 30 years of varied experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries related to corporate development, strategic planning and R&D management. The company anticipates that his pharmaceutical industry experience will be valuable to LSBC, as the company moves more toward becoming a product driven company, through strategic collaborations with partners employing its proteomics, functional genomics and GENEWARE (R) technology platforms.

Most recently, Dr. Bax served as Vice President of the Biopharmaceutical Development Division of SRI International, where he directed the pre-clinical development activities of new drug and vaccine candidates for infectious diseases and cancer. From 1992 to 1995, Dr. Bax served as Vice President, Business Development and Product Planning at Corvas International, a biotechnology company in San Diego. During the 1970's and 80's, he held various senior positions in corporate development, strategic development, licensing and R&D management at Syntex Corporation. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, and an MBA degree in finance from the University of Santa Clara.

Guy della-Cioppa, Ph.D., a twelve year veteran with the company, most recently served as Vice President, Genomics.
