Although there has been growing use of large-scale corpora in many areas of linguistics, the potential of corpus linguistics has not yet been fully explored for either discourse analysis or pragmatics, according to the editors (professors of English linguistics at U. of Zurich, Switzerland), who present 22 papers they hope will demonstrate the value of bringing corpus linguistics into the realms of pragmatics and discourse analysis. Papers apply corpus pragmatic perspectives to both historical and present day data; discuss corpus linguistic approaches to specific problems of the English lexicon, grammatical aspects, and semantics; and address specific methodological problems of corpus compilation and analysis.
