He said: ``I am aware of a concerning number of fatal road traffic collisions in that area.'' Dion Donald Jervis, 33,died when a Mercedes sports car,in which he was a passenger, overturned near Tan Lan Farm,Llanrwst, shortly after midnight on October 17, 2003. He had not been wearing a seat belt and he suffered multiple injuries. The driver,company director Frank Thornley, of Maenan, Llanrwst, told police he had swerved to avoid a white van which failed to stop. But PC Graham said they had failed to find any trace of the other vehicle. Mr Thornley said he employed Mr Jervis as a crew member in a game fishing business in Florida. On the evening of October 16 they were the last to leave the Albion pub in Llanrwst, where they were seen by part time barman Gavin Jones. He told the inquest in Llandudno that Mr Jervis was very drunk and noisy, while Mr Thornley's eyes were glazed. By coincidence,Mr Jones was among the fire fighters called to the scene of the accident and recognised the two men. Consultant pathologist Dr Andrew Dalton Andrew John Dalton is a first class cricketer who played 21 first class and 17 list A one day games for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1969 and 1972. A right handed batsman, he scored 710 first class runs at 24.48 with a best of 128 against Middlesex CCC. said analysis showed that Mr Jervis, of Pendref, Llanrwst, had 330 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, about four times the legal driving limit. The coroner said he was aware that Mr Thornley was facing a charge of drink-driving,having had 92 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80. The inquest was also told that traces of cannabis were also found in Mr Thornley's blood. Mr Thornley declined to give an interview but told the police that he swerved to avoid a white Transit truck. ``It was coming on my side of the road very fast,''he said. Mr Thornley entered the witness box but, on the advice of his barrister, refused to answer questions about the collision or the build-up to it. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. |
