Coronado to the Nile-ENT spectaculars.September offered otolaryngologists two unusually good meetings. K.J. Lee, MD, president of the American Academy The American Academy in Berlin is a non-partisan academic institution in Berlin. It was founded in September 1994 by a group of prominent Americans and Germans, among them Richard Holbrooke, Henry Kissinger, Richard von Weizsäcker, Fritz Stern and Otto Graf Lambsdorff and opened in of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS AAO-HNS American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (Alexandria, VA) ) orchestrated one of the Academy's best meetings ever, in San Diego. The blockbuster opening ceremony featured a dazzling audiovisual show of fast-paced formal presentations and entertainment. Highlights of the meeting were the presence of Miss America 1995, cochlear implant cochlear implant n. An electronic device that stimulates auditory nerve fibers in the inner ear in individuals with severe or profound bilateral hearing loss, allowing them to recognize some sounds, especially speech sounds. patient Heather Whitestone McCallum; a lecture on human memory process mechanisms by Nobel Laureate Prof. Eric R. Kandel, MD; an innovative President's Reception with outstanding musical performers; and an uncommonly useful and educational scientific program. Only three days after leaving San Diego, which included a full day working in the office, Marlene and I were in Cairo, Egypt, at the opening ceremony of the XVII World Congress of the International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies (IFOS IFOS International Federation of ORL (Oto-Rhino-Laryngological) Societies IFOS It's Five O'Clock Somehwere ), with the Great Pyramids in the background. President M. Nasser Kotby and his organizing committee created an unforgettable meeting for more than 3,000 of the world's leading otolaryngologists. All scientific sessions were held in the modem Cairo Convention Center and featured plenary sessions, instruction courses, panel discussions, posters, and free papers. The huge stage and grandstand had been completed only days before the performance. The final Congress Gala Dinner was at the beautiful Andalusia Gardens by the bank of the Nile and featured a spectacular fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics. fireworks Explosives or combustibles used for display. Of ancient Chinese origin, fireworks evidently developed out of military rockets and explosive missiles and accompanied the spread of military explosives westward to display. The U.S. delegate to IFOS, Nikhil J. Bhatt, MD, voted with the majority to select Sao Paolo, Brazil, to be the site of the 2009 IFOS World Congress Meeting. The XVIII IFOS World Congress Meeting will be held in Rome, Italy, June 25-30, 2005, under the presidency of Prof. Desiderio Passali. We look forward to attending that meeting in the city of Caesar.
