Vietnam Telecoms National Co. for Ho Chi Minh Highway project

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW), a world-leading supplier of optical fiber and cable, and Fibre Optic Cable and Accessories Limited (FOCAL), a Vietnam fiber-optic cable manufacturer, announced today that Vietnam Telecoms National Co. (VTN) will deploy Corning(R) LEAF(R) optical fiber in its Ho Chi Minh Highway project.

This will be the first installation of LEAF fiber or any non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) in Vietnam.

LEAF fiber, as well as Corning(R) SMF-28(TM) fiber, will be installed in a hybrid network along the first 430 kilometers of the Ho Chi Minh Highway, a major infrastructure project in Vietnam, which will span Hoa Lac-Hatay to HCMC when complete. Shipment will begin in the second quarter of 2002. FOCAL, an equity company between Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) and Corning Cable Systems, is the cable supplier selected for this project.

LEAF fiber, the world's most advanced NZ-DSF, has a large effective area to allow higher levels of power to be transmitted through the fiber than standard NZ-DSFs, minimizing the non-linear effects that degrade system performance. SMF-28 fiber, the world's most widely deployed fiber, offers high performance in 1310 and 1550 nm applications and excellent splicing and handling capability.
