the company, its new catalytic converter substrate will allow automobile manufacturers to meet the tough new standards without having to increase the size of today's catalytic converters. Corning said it believes automobile manufacturers will begin using the substrate in advance of the regulations and that some manufacturers could use them as early as next fall to reduce fleet-average emissions of automobiles, trucks and sport-utility vehicles.

The substrate will be coated with a precious-metal catalyst and then positioned at the core of the catalytic converter. Hot, untreated exhaust gases will pass through the substrate, where they will react with the catalyst and convert to harmless gases and water vapor.

"We think the 900/2 substrate will play a critical role in the development of cleaner vehicles in the 21st century," said Adriane M. Brown, vice president and general manager of Corning's Environmental Products Division. "This is the latest step in Corning's drive to develop practical solutions to help the auto industry move toward zero-level emissions."
