Under the agreement, Corning will be Huawei's principal supplier of single-channel EDFAs for its high-speed transport system.

The agreement, covering a three-year time frame, marks the start of a strategic relationship for the supply of optical amplifiers and pump lasers by Corning to Huawei.

"Strength in amplifier design, pump lasers and passive components confirmed our decision to partner with Corning," said Pingan Zhang, senior vice president, Optical Networking Communications between computers, telephones and other electronic devices using light. An optical network is far more reliable and has far greater potential transmission capacity than networking in the electrical domain. See optical fiber.  Systems, Huawei Technologies. "Corning(R) PureGain(TM) EDFA (Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier) A device that boosts the signal in an optical fiber. Introduced in the late 1980s, the EDFA was the first successful optical amplifier.  modules meet Huawei's stringent technical requirements for high-speed data transport."

Huawei will use the Corning PureGain 1000 amplifier platform in its OptiX 10G(TM) SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) The European counterpart to SONET. See SONET.
