Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that Corning(R) OptiFocus(TM) Lensed Fiber was selected for the R&D Magazine 2002 "R&D 100 Award."

Each year the R&D 100 Award recognizes the 100 most technologically significant product developments. The award will be presented at a ceremony on October 16th in Chicago, Illinois.

OptiFocus Lensed Fiber is a flexible lensing technology, designed to enable optical device miniaturization, high coupling efficiency, packaging and alignment simplification, and cost reduction. The lens is thermally formed on optical fiber using a proprietary Corning process that delivers unequaled precision and consistency.

Corning's telecommunications customers are beginning to rely on OptiFocus lensed fiber to efficiently couple transmission signals between optical fiber and communications devices, such as MEMs, DWDMs, switches, transmitters and other active and passive devices. Others have found ways of utilizing OptiFocus to improve biochemical, motion and heat sensor equipment.
