Corning is seeking damages and an order restraining POF from continuing its patent infringement patent infringement n. the manufacture and/or use of an invention or improvement for which someone else owns a patent issued by the government, without obtaining permission of the owner of the patent by contract, license or waiver. and to halt the import of infringing fiber. Corning, Plasma Optical Fibre of Eindhoven, the Netherlands has been infringing on Corning's European Patent (UK) No. 0261772 in the manufacture of optical fiber that is being imported into the United Kingdom. This suit is the second such action Corning has taken against POF, having filed a complaint against the company with the U.S. International Trade Commission on April 9 of this year. In response the USITC USITC United States International Trade Commission (US Federal agency) announced on May 12 that it would pursue Corning's complaint and initiate an investigation of the optical fibers being imported into the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The Corning patent relates to a proprietary process for applying a coating to an optical fiber, which protects it during routine handling and installation.
