Corning Announces Major Expansion of Catalytic Converter Substrate Facility.

) announced today that it will expand its Blacksburg manufacturing facility, located in Christiansburg, Virginia Christiansburg is a town in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,947 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery CountyGR6. , to meet growing worldwide demand for substrates used at the core of catalytic converters. Work on the $25 million expansion will be completed by January 1996.

The facility is being expanded to provide increased capacity and flexibility, and follows on the heels of an expansion completed earlier this year. Corning expects the worldwide market for catalytic converter substrates to increase from 70 million units in 1994 to nearly 100 million in the year 2000.

The plant expansion will also enable Corning to supply auto makers with its new CelcorTM XT thin-wall substrates, which provide a number of performance advantages compared to standard substrates, and which can be used very close to the engine, where temperatures can reach more than 1,000 degrees centigrade centigrade /cen·ti·grade/ (sen´ti-grad) having 100 gradations (steps or degrees); see under scale.
