Cornell Leverette Moore of Dorsey & Whitney, LLP Elected President of Sigma Pi Phi, Nation's Oldest African-American Greek-Letter Fraternity.


MINNEAPOLIS -- Cornell Leverette Moore, a partner in Dorsey's Minneapolis office, was elected president-elect (his official title is "Grand Sire Archon-Elect") of the Sigma Pi Phi Sigma Pi Phi is generally considered to be the first African-American Greek-lettered organization. Sigma Pi Phi was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 15, 1904. [2] The founders included two doctors, a dentist and a physician [3].  Fraternity, a non-profit organization of college- and university-educated professional men dedicated to the uplift of the African-American community. Sigma Pi Phi advocates for civil rights, studies issues affecting African-Americans, and awards college scholarships to deserving students.

Mr. Moore's election is especially significant because it came as Sigma Pi Phi celebrated its 100th anniversary. He will assume leadership in 2006.
