Cornell's Macaulay Library Chooses Exabyte For Automated Data Backup.

BOULDER, Colo. -- Compatibility with Apple OS, superior capacity and flexibility were major factors in selection of Exabyte's Magnum 8x143 Library

Exabyte Corporation (OTCBB OTCBB

:EXBT), a performance and value leader in tape backup Using magnetic tape for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. Users can add an internal or external tape drive to their desktop computers for backup purposes, and files are typically copied to the tapes using a backup utility that updates on a periodic schedule. , restore and archival systems, today announced the Macaulay Library at Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology ornithology

Branch of zoology dealing with the study of birds. Early writings on birds were largely anecdotal (including folklore) or practical (e.g., treatises on falconry and game-bird management).
has selected the Exabyte Magnum 8x143 Tape Library with LTO (Linear Tape Open) A family of open magnetic tape standards developed by HP, IBM and Quantum (formerly the Certance subsidiary of Seagate) that are licensed to third-party vendors. LTO cartridges contain a memory that stores historical usage data. (TM) (Ultrium(TM)) Technology to store, protect and manage its valuable audio and video data assets, which includes more than 160,000 digital recordings of wildlife.

After a rigorous assessment of its data storage requirements and evaluating a number of manufacturers' systems, the Macaulay Library - which maintains the world's largest archive of animal sounds and associated video - chose Exabyte because of its strong track record and the suitability of the technology to the Library's current and future needs.

"We found Exabyte more forward thinking than their competitors," stated Marc Dantzker, curator of the Visual Media Collection in the Library. "The Macaulay Library has a heterogeneous OS environment, so Exabyte's cross-platform compatibility was extremely important in our selection. Apple Computer has worked closely with Cornell's Macaulay Library to develop and deploy many of its media solutions. The Exabyte system performs very reliably as a part of this complex data storage environment."

"Our ability to collaborate with Apple Computer was integral to this win and is a hallmark of Exabyte's commitment to our channel and our joint customers," said Tom Ward, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Exabyte. "Our success at Cornell reflects the fact that the Magnum 8x143 sets a new benchmark for capacity, speed, scalability, and price for this class of automation along with the high standard of data reliability that customers expect from Exabyte storage products."

Superior customer service and support were also cited as factors in the Library's choice of Exabyte. "Customer service from Exabyte has been superb," Dantzker said. "They've been with us all the way through deployment and integration, and they continue to provide quality support for the inevitable questions that arise."

Teams from Apple and Exabyte worked together to meet the complex requirements at Cornell. Exabyte's Magnum 8x143 tape library is housed off-site for safety, so remote management and reliability was critical to control administrative overhead. "Now that it is all integrated," said Dantzker, "the system runs largely unattended with most all of the administration performed remotely."

The Macaulay Library maintains more than 160,000 recordings of 67 percent of the world's birds, and is rapidly increasing its holdings of insects, fish, frogs and mammals. Its digitized collection currently contains more than six terabytes of information, and is expected to expand by at least three terabytes per year. The Library also requires the back up of several servers and non-archival clients, adding an additional terabyte to the back up system. With a storage capacity of up to 30 terabytes, the Exabyte Magnum 8x143 easily accommodates the Library's current storage needs and will provide for future data storage growth.

Like Cornell, organizations all over the world have chosen Exabyte's innovative tape storage solutions for the value they provide - speed, reliability, capacity, and ease of use at a competitive price - all backed by superior customer service.
