REDWOOD CITY Redwood City, city (1990 pop. 66,072), seat of San Mateo co., W Calif., on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1868. Manufactures include commmunications, electrical, electronic, and medical equipment. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999--

Leading Application Service Provider (ASP), Corio Inc. announced today that they have added data communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  systems manufacturer, Ericsson WebCom Inc. (Mountain View, CA) to their list of customers.

Ericsson WebCom will access business applications on demand from Corio. By eliminating business operations Business operations are those activities involved in the running of a business for the purpose of producing value for the stakeholders. Compare business processes. The outcome of business operations is the harvesting of value from assets  unrelated to research and development, Ericsson WebCom can concentrate on differentiating their product and building market share, without the pressure of hiring and recruiting manufacturing technicians and IT staff.

Corio's integrated application suite provides customers with scaleable software that would be too costly and time-consuming to install internally. By focusing on business operations unrelated to a company's core competencies A core competency is something that a firm can do well and that meets the following three conditions specified by Hamel and Prahalad (1990):
  1. It provides customer benefits
  2. It is hard for competitors to imitate
  3. It can be leveraged widely to many products and markets.
, Corio offers customers top tier enterprise applications, front office applications and even integrated manufacturing applications through their partnership with contract manufacturer Flextronics.

Essential to Ericsson WebCom's decision was the ability to obtain integrated product flow starting with the end user, configuring the product and extending through the Corio/PeopleSoft system into Flextronics and back. "Corio's ability to provide us with more than simply an enterprise solution was a key factor in our decision to access applications with them," said David Wittenkamp, chief financial officer at Ericsson WebCom. "Their integrated functions allow us to operate at a capacity we could not support internally."

Ericsson WebCom's launch of their flagship product A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation. , the WebSwitch, a turnkey IPBX See IP PBX.  and Gateway that can be networked across the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , the WAN or the Internet, catapulted them into the expanding world of e-business. Recognizing the need to concentrate on developing their products rather than their IT infrastructure, Ericsson WebCom turned to Corio for an enterprise application that would support their rapid growth. Additionally, Ericsson WebCom needed a contract manufacturing solution that could also pace with them. The integration between Flextronics' manufacturing application and Corio's business applications on demand enables Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as Ericsson WebCom to seamlessly transfer new customer orders to the manufacturing floor.

By providing outsourced manufacturing and applications, Corio and Flextronics are allowing customers to become "virtual corporations," a growing trend in business during the last five years. Virtual corporations outsource activities to IT and Manufacturing experts while focusing on their own core competencies such as research and development, and marketing.

"Ericsson WebCom fits the typical Corio customer profile: a rapidly growing Internet company with high standards, but limited resources to spend on non-mission critical operations," said George Kadifa, chief executive officer at Corio. "With our extensive customer offerings, we've equipped ourselves to handle the emerging growth of companies exactly like Ericsson WebCom."
