Corinne left me cold; + REVIEWS + CORINNE BAILEY RAE, Carling Academy, Birmingham.

Byline: PAUL BRADLEY

I WANTED Corinne Bailey Rae to be brilliant, steal my heart, and make me buy every one of her songs from this day onwards.

But she was never brilliant and hardly made an attempt to capture my heart as she sang to 2,000 fans waiting in anticipation.

No doubt her voice was pitch-perfect, an amazing noise coming from such a slight singer-songwriter, but she rarely warmed the eager crowd as she sang her hit album.

She began promisingly with I'd Like To and made us all wait for her catchy single Put Your Records On but by that time I was at the bar, fed up of waiting for her to get out of third gear.

Maybe the Carling Academy was too big for her. A more intimate room would have created a suitable atmosphere.

The trumpeter and saxophonist were well worth the pounds 20 ticket and at one point her drummer stole the show.

But I was really hoping for something more than Miss Bailey Rae simply singing her album.
