Corgenix and Rebio Gen, Inc. Sign Extension to Technology Agreement for Hyaluronic Acid.

DENVER -- Corgenix Medical Corporation (OTC BB: CONX) has executed an extension to the technology license agreement with Rebio Gen, Inc., a subsidiary of Fujirebio, Inc., Tokyo, Japan. The license was originally granted to Corgenix by Chugai Diagnostics Science Co., Ltd. (CDS), a subsidiary of Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Chugai) of Tokyo, Japan. CDS was acquired from Chugai by Fujirebio in 2002.

The license agreement provides Corgenix with the United States and worldwide (excluding Japan) rights to intellectual property to manufacture and market a microplate format ELISA test that measures hyaluronic acid hyaluronic acid /hy·al·uron·ic ac·id/ (hi?ah-ldbobr-ron´ik) a glycosaminoglycan found in lubricating proteoglycans of synovial fluid, vitreous humor, cartilage, blood vessels, skin, and the umbilical cord. It is a linear chain of about 2500 repeating disaccharide units. (HA). The extension licenses the technology to Corgenix through the expiration of the patents.

Clinical studies have shown that HA levels in the blood of patients with chronic liver disease, including viral hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis
alcoholic cirrhosis  a type in alcoholics, due to associated nutritional deficiency or chronic excessive exposure to alcohol as a hepatotoxin.
atrophic cirrhosis  a type in which the liver is decreased in size, seen in posthepatic or postnecrotic cirrhosis and in some alcoholics.
, correlate with the degree of tissue damage to the liver (fibrosis or scarring). In hepatitis C (HCV), the assessment of liver damage is currently performed primarily by repeated histological examinations of a liver biopsy, a costly and painful procedure that may be associated with complications such as infection and internal bleeding. The HA test manufactured by Corgenix is a less costly serologic marker for liver damage, and may play a significant role in the clinical management of liver disease and cirrhosis.

Currently, in the United States, the Hyaluronic Acid test kit is for Investigational Use Only as it has not received clearance or approval for diagnostic use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Therefore, the results obtained from the use of this product should not be reported or related to a patient's diagnosis, treatment, or care.

Approximately 85% of patients infected with the hepatitis C virus develop chronic inflammation of the liver that may lead to cirrhosis and/or liver cancer. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 4 million Americans are infected with hepatitis C and more than 30,000 new cases occur each year. About 10,000 deaths per year are caused by hepatitis C infection. In the US, hepatitis C is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease and the most common indication of liver transplantation. In addition, liver cirrhosis resulting from alcohol abuse is one of the ten leading causes of death in the United States. Over 18 million Americans are alcoholics, and between 10 and 15% of these persons have cirrhosis at the time of death.

Douglass T. Simpson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Corgenix said, "We are pleased with the extension of our rights to this technology. We have seen a significant increase in the interest for the hyaluronic acid test over the past few years. As the World Health Organization estimates that 4% of the world population is infected with HCV, we expect this will continue to be a significant contributor to our Company for many years."
