CorelDRAW Celebrates 10 Great Years and 10 Million Units Sold.

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 1999--A tradition of graphics excellence was born 10 years ago tomorrow with the first box of CorelDRAW(tm) 1 shipping to the market.

A decade later, CorelDRAW continues its strong presence as one of Corel's (NASDAQ:COSFF) (TSE:COS.) flagship products, with more than 10 million units sold worldwide.

Originally code named Waldo for the robot arm that can mimic hand movements, CorelDRAW has been upgraded and released eight times since the spring of 1989. Since then, it has become the product of choice for a large and diversified community of users.

"The early versions of CorelDRAW appealed to graphic designers and computer artists," said Pat Beirne, one of the original developers of CorelDRAW and now chief engineer for Corel Computer.

"Over the years we've added tools so that the product can serve a variety of groups, from T-shirt manufacturers to map makers, quilt and stained glass designers and the general public," said Beirne. "These groups never talk to each other, but they talk to us. Our job is to design tools that help them all."

CorelDRAW's user base is still growing and the latest version, CorelDRAW 8, integrates advanced features like page layout and illustration, photo editing and bitmap creation and 3D modeling and rendering.

"With CorelDRAW 1 we would have been more than happy selling 2,000 copies," said Beirne. "And now here we are -- in 1999 we will have sold a total of 10 million units."

The product that wins awards and sells above expectations has also launched a career or two.

"I won a grand prize at Corel's World Design Contest in 1995 with a design I created in CorelDRAW," said Robert Travers, Corel's lead design manager. "When I won, I asked if they were looking for designers and I ended up moving from Montreal to Ottawa to join the team."

Corel plans to include its users in the anniversary celebrations with a variety of activities and promotions to be announced shortly, which will recognize the success of CorelDRAW and its users in markets throughout the world.

In addition, Corel will support 10 preselected charities in honor of the anniversary, by donating computer equipment, software and training.
