Corel Partners with Bitstream to Provide Next-Generation Font Support for Linux.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and OTTAWA, CANADA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1999--

Bitstream to provide font server use and management for industry

standard fonts for Linux(R)

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ:BITS) and Corel Corporation (NASDAQ:CORL)(TSE:COR) announced today that Corel has licensed a Linux(R) font server currently being developed by Bitstream. Corel will integrate this font server into the office and graphics suites that it is currently developing for Linux.

Bitstream's new Linux font server can render PostScript(R) Type 1 fonts, in addition to TrueType(R) and other industry standard font formats. It also succeeds at making fonts on the Linux OS user friendly by providing robust and intuitive font management that is comparable to what is currently available for the Windows(R) or Macintosh(R) operating system. The new Bitstream(R) technology will help the Linux platform overcome one of its most significant barriers to acceptance in the desktop market.

Corel recently released its first Linux operating system, Corel(R) LINUX(R) OS, and is currently developing office and graphics suites for Linux. Corel(R) WordPerfect(R) 8 for Linux(R) has been hugely successful as a free download: the office suite for Linux will be available in early 2000. The CorelDRAW(R) graphics suite for Linux will be available in the summer of 2000. Corel is currently integrating the Bitstream font server into both of these suites.

With a long history of delivering technology that makes fonts easy to use anywhere, Bitstream is uniquely positioned to introduce a font rendering and font management solution for Linux. Built on the FontTastic(tm) product acquired from Gallium Software, Inc. in 1996, this solution will provide Linux developers with an essential font technology for future product considerations.

"Bitstream is excited about introducing one of the most user-friendly Linux font subsystems for TrueType and PostScript," said Paul Trevithick, president of Bitstream Inc. "This will be a critical technological step towards the commercial success of Linux. We are confident that other Linux developers like Corel will recognize its value, and that many will adopt it as the technology of choice for providing font fidelity and ease-of-use for their customers."

"The Bitstream font technology will give us the highest-quality font subsystem for Linux," said Rene Schmidt, vice president of software development for Linux at Corel Corporation. "This technology moves us closer to our goal of having high functionality and true cross-platform compatibility between Windows and Linux."
