Corel Paradox 8 Brings Data Management to the Desktop.

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1997--Corel Corporation (TSE:COS; NASDAQ:COSFF) customers can now take advantage of the data-handling power of Corel(R) Paradox(R) 8 to complete tasks, build applications and manage large amounts of business data as the award-winning Windows database is now available as a standalone product across North America.

Corel Paradox 8 runs on Windows(R) 95 and Windows(R) NT 4.0 and carries a suggested retail price of $129 U.S. Prices are subject to change without notice and dealers may sell for less. Corel Paradox 8 is also integrated with Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 Professional which began shipping Aug. 28.

Corel licensed the original Paradox source code from Borland in the fall of 1996 and assumed responsibility for development, marketing, sales and support for the Paradox family of products worldwide. Corel Paradox 8 is available in several configurations:

Corel(R) Paradox(R) 8 Standalone: Available now.

Corel(R) Paradox(R) 8 Runtime/Java Runtime: Scheduled to be released in October of 1997, the Runtime/Java(TM) version will allow a Paradox client to run on any platform while accessing a Paradox database on a Windows server. It is the first database to be developed as a Java client and marks the first appearance of Corel's Java technology that is code-named Remagen.

This product will revolutionize how Paradox database applications are developed since it eliminates the need to port a single Paradox application to several platforms. Developers will only need to write an application once to make it capable of being deployed across several platforms.

Corel(R) Paradox(R) 8 Enterprise Edition: Also scheduled for an October 1997 release, this product will offer a complete solution for creating and deploying client/server applications with Corel Paradox. -0-

Only the standalone version of Corel(R) Paradox(R) 8 and Corel(R) WordPerfect(R) Suite 8 Professional are available through retail channels. The Runtime and Enterprise Editions will be available through Corel customer service centres. -0-

Corel(R) Paradox(R) 8 New and Enhanced Features:

Application Framework -- a Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool that allows users to bind forms and reports into real applications with just a few clicks of the mouse. By default, these applications include an executable file, splash screen menus and toolbars.

Cross-Windows compatibility -- backwards compatibility lets users load Corel Paradox(R) 7 tables directly into Corel Paradox 8 without losing data.

New Internet features(a) -- new tools for publishing Paradox data in HTML format on the Web. Corel Paradox 8 ships with Internet publishing experts and two different Web servers. Enhanced UI and increased usability -- a new, flat, clean look to conform to the Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 Professional UI.

PerfectExpert(TM) integration -- an integrated program that delivers exceptional hand-on help. This groundbreaking technology combines interactive help and advanced Wizard technology to let users get the job done without hunting through manuals, online references or multiple menus.

Suite-wide integration -- new features such as the Application Bar, consistent menus, and common dialogs and toolbars make it easy to use Corel Paradox 8 with the other applications in Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 Professional. Users can export Paradox tables to Corel WordPerfect 8 and also import and export Quattro Pro data.

Project Viewer -- includes a new Windows Explorer look and feel and common functionality. It offers RAD technology that combines a collection of Corel Paradox 8 development tools to make it easy to create unique applications. The Application Framework has also been integrated with the Project Viewer.

Support for Delphi add-in DLLs -- developers can extend the Paradox environment with Delphi.

BDE 4.0 -- the inclusion of the Borland Database Engine version 4.0 lends overall performance improvements, optimizes SQL queries, and also allows for direct support of Microsoft(R) FoxPro and Microsoft(R) Access databases.

ObjectPALl(TM) -- enhancements to ObjectPal include the addition of library methods, properties and types of constants to support the new features.

SQL Query Builder -- a new graphical editor has been added to make creating complicated SQL queries more intuitive.

Sample applications -- Includes new fully documented Application Framework samples and a traditional Paradox application which is fully documented and referenced in the User Guide. -0-

Under the terms of the license agreement, Borland will continue development of the Borland Database Engine, a key technology found in Paradox and other Borland products, and will continue to sell stand-alone versions of Paradox through Oct. 21, 1997, as a customer service to Borland corporate customers.
