The ninth annual Corel World Design Contest was open to participants from around the globe from April 1998 to January 1999. Monthly winners were chosen in seven graphics categories and will be flown to Ottawa for Corel's Gala event, "An Evening of Art & Inspiration," on April 7. At the Gala, a Grand Prize Winner from each category and a Best of Show winner will be announced.

"We are proud that our products are used worldwide to inspire and create new designs," said Dr. Michael Cowpland Michael Cowpland (born April 23, 1943) is a Canadian entrepreneur, businessman, and the founder and one-time president, chairman and CEO of Corel, a Canadian software company.

Cowpland was born in Bexhill, Sussex, England and obtained a BSc.
, president and chief executive officer of Corel. "It will be exciting to meet these emerging designers and commend them for their creative efforts."

Kuleshov was born in Moscow, Russia and now lives in the nearby city of Zelenograd with his wife and two daughters. Kuleshov's passion for drawing and design stems from an early age -- he recalls drawing while teachers were delivering lessons and getting in trouble for it. Today he works for an advertising company, and is free to indulge his love for designing. First introduced to the world of computer design in 1995, Kuleshov has quickly grown to appreciate the potential it offers him in the way of designing.

"Computer design allows me to reach for and achieve the goals I have in terms of design," said Kuleshov. "Programs such as CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT Corel PHOTO-PAINT is a raster graphics editor created by Corel. The current version is Corel PHOTO-PAINT X3 (13). It is not sold by itself, but instead included with CorelDRAW (CorelDRAW Graphics Suite). Its main uses are image manipulation and creation of web graphics.  are useful not only for editing images but also for enhancing and improving them."

Kuleshov first entered the Corel World Design Contest in 1997, when he was honored as a monthly winner in the Landscapes and Landmarks category. His latest winning design, PROfile, was born from the idea of creating a still life using objects made of different substances. The design, which was created as a promotional poster for the PROfile Design Centre, depicts brushes and paints on a canvas backdrop. Kuleshov used features such as transparency, light rays, reflects and shadows to combine the still life with different backgrounds.

"The canvas was a natural background for art brushes, paint and other supplies," said Kuleshov. "I added water drops to bring the scene to life and give it a sense of presence."

Participants of Corel's ninth annual World Design Contest were required to create entries using any version of CorelDRAW, Corel PHOTO-PAINT(R), Corel DREAM 3D, CorelXARA(tm), Corel(R) WordPerfect(R), Corel(R) Office Professional, Corel VENTURA A Windows desktop publishing program from Corel.
