The 1.35 million square foot building is the first new, cabinet-level headquarters to be designed and constructed in the nation's capital in more than 30 years. It is also the first major federal building to be built with HSPD-12 compliance as its guiding security principle.

CoreStreet guided the development of a security infrastructure design that enables individuals to use a single smart credential for access to both physical and IT systems, as outlined in the Directive. As a result of CoreStreet's vast experience with PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) A framework for creating a secure method for exchanging information based on public key cryptography. The foundation of a PKI is the certificate authority (CA), which issues digital certificates that authenticate the identity of  and physical security, the building will be fully HSPD-12 compliant when it is completed.

"CoreStreet has been involved with HSPD-12 from the outset, helping the US government, agencies, integrators and solution providers achieve their goals within the tight deadline," explained Dave Engberg, CoreStreet's chief technology officer. "The DOT is demonstrating its strong commitment to security by treating HSPD-12 compliance as critical to its building's design, we are proud to be a part in this significant project."

HSPD-12 calls for a common way for federal employees and contractors to gain access to both federally controlled physical and logical properties. As a result of this directive, the National Institute of Standards created the Federal Information Processing Standard Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) are publicly announced standards developed by the United States Federal government for use by all non-military government agencies and by government contractors.  201 (FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) A series of publications issed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that specifies information security guidelines for federal government departments and agencies.  201) that outlines the technical specifications that such a system must meet.
