Birmingham (bûr`mĭnghăm')

 can take a trip back in time tomorrow when an historic hall stages a day dedicated to apples.

Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  is Blakesley Hall's fifth annual Apple Day, when free entertainment is laid on between 11.30am and 4pm.

Activities at the hall in Blakesley Road, Yardley, include apple squeezing, fruit tree grafting grafting, horticultural practice of uniting parts of two plants so that they grow as one. The scion, or cion, the part grafted onto the stock or rooted part, may be a single bud, as in budding, or a cutting that has several buds.  demonstrations, talks on the use of apples in Tudor times, and a "Hunt the Golden Apple" competition.

There will also be medieval plays, honey tasting, face painting, morris dancing, a prize raffle and children's activities. More information about tomorrow's event is available on 0121 464 2193 or www.bmag.org.uk.

Another Apple Day is set to be held at Birmingham's Woodgate Valley Country Park on Sunday, October 22, from noon until 4pm.
