But it wasn't easy.

The eighth-ranked Red Devils pulled away from a tight game in the third quarter and hit their free throws at the end as they defeated No. 7 Philomath 57-46 in the opening round of the Class 3A boys basketball state tournament at Gill Coliseum Groundbreaking for the Gill Coliseum Annex project is scheduled for March, with a completion date of early 2008. The Annex will be located between Gill Coliseum and the Tommy Prothro Football Complex.  on Tuesday night.

It was the first tournament game for Coquille (24-1), the Far West League champions, since 1989.

The Red Devils will next play Wilsonville in a quarterfinal game Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

He also made 7-of-11 free throws and grabbed six rebounds.

David Timpe added 18 points and seven rebounds for Coquille, while Tyler Kinney recorded 11 points and six rebounds.

Jake Kettles scored 16 points to pace the Warriors (21-6), who shot on 29.6 percent from the field.

"My kids were so nervous before the game," Coquille coach Dan Cumberland said. "They were so on edge; they wouldn't even talk. But boy, it's good to get this game. Now they know they can play here."

The Red Devils began to increase their 22-20 halftime lead midway through the third period as Lee VanPelt and Timpe scored on short jumpers and Pizzola on a layup for a 6-0 run and a 38-27 advantage.

Kinney opened the fourth quarter with a layup for a 40-29 lead.

A three-pointer by Kettles with 1:39 left cut Philomath's deficit to 48-44.

But Timpe answered with layup at the other end, and Coquille made 7-of-10 free throws in the final minute to ice the victory.
