Copy cats can make you feel flush again; Feline the pinch? Here are some wacky ways to beat the credit crunch.

BIRMINGHAM folk have come up with some wacky ways to save cash during the credit crunch Credit Crunch

An economic condition whereby investment capital is difficult to obtain. Banks and investors become weary of lending funds to corporations thereby driving up the price of debt products for borrowers.

And now an npower survey reveals some of the strangest - including training the cat to use the loo to save on kitty litter.

 and miserable, these tough times may be bringing out the best in us.

From growing fruit and vegetables, baking bread and cakes, and cooking from scratch, to cycling and walking more, it seems that Brummies are becoming more resourceful, less wasteful and heading in the right direction to be more energy efficient.

And 11 per cent of Birmingham respondents also said they most relate to the Wombles - making good use of things other people throw away.

Other examples of the extreme lengths people are going to combat the eco-nomidownturn include using wallpaper samples and tester paints to decorate a room, and growing a beard in order to save buying razors.

In an indication that the recession is breeding this type of inspired inventiveness, the survey revealed that the character the majority of Brummies most associate themselves with is Wallace of 'Wallace and Gromit' fame.

The wacky inventor, who is currently starring in npower's loft insulation TV commercial, was chosen by 42 per cent of respondents - higher than anywhere else in the UK.

npower is also keen to help people save cash on their heating bills by encouraging more homeowners to insulate their loft with a recession-busting offer.

The company has teamed up with insulation manufacturer Rockwool and national builders merchant Build Center for a 2-for-1 offer on rolls of insulation with free home delivery thrown in.
