Cops up for top award; COMMUNITY: Police work to keep kids off drugs.

A POLICE team working in inner city Birmingham has been nominated nom·i·nate  
tr.v. nom·i·nat·ed, nom·i·nat·ing, nom·i·nates
1. To propose by name as a candidate, especially for election.

2. To designate or appoint to an office, responsibility, or honor.
 for their innovative work to keep youngsters off drugs and out of trouble.

Officers on the Lozells Neighbourhood Team regularly give up their free time to work on community projects aimed at helping children.

Their projects have included taking young people on canal holidays and holding sports sessions, including work with Aston Villa. Last week, 25 youngsters aged eight to 19 from schools across Lozells were given a behind-thescenes glimpse of what it was like to be part of the 'thin blue line' when they visited the station.

The youngsters took fingerprints Impressions or reproductions of the distinctive pattern of lines and grooves on the skin of human fingertips.

They have now been nominated in the fourth annual national Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards. Insp Danielle Corfield, for Lozells, Birchfield and East Handsworth said: "I'm very proud of the team who have a real energy and commitment to serving the local community.

"We're involved in many different initiatives including supporting local youth and sports groups."
