POLICE were yesterday hunting a man who has been cutting down trees in a town in the middle of the night.

Mystery surrounds the vandal's motives after he destroyed mature trees in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim Antrim (ăn`trĭm), district (1991 pop. 48,000), 217 sq mi (562 sq km), NE Northern Ireland. The eastern and seaward area is a picturesque region of mountains and glens; to the west, where Antrim borders on Lough Neagh, lie the fertile valleys .

Police believe he is armed with either an axe or a bow saw.

In the latest attack in Elizabeth Avenue in the town several trees were chopped chop 1

Residents woke to find the trees, some thought to be more than 100 years old, destroyed.

A police spokeswoman said: "There have been reports of a number of trees having been cut down in the Elizabeth Avenue area of the town.

"Anyone with information should contact police in Carrickfergus."
