"This is the first true, end-to-end, multi-line VoDSL solution for the MTU market space," said Manish Goel, vice president of corporate development at Copper Mountain Networks. "The combination of Copper Mountain's packet voice technology and Sphere's advanced call-processing solutions enables DSL providers to deliver toll-quality voice services that are very compelling for MTU business customers from a cost perspective."

"DSL broadband providers must be able to cost-effectively provision, scale and manage converged voice and data services to be competitive going forward," said Frank Brletich, president at Sphere Communications. "Service providers can now meet this challenge in the MTU market with a complete package that combines the proven flexibility and the provisioning and scalability advantages of Copper Mountain's DSL access technology with Sphere's converged voice and data solutions."

About the Copper Mountain/Sphere End-to-End MTU VoDSL Solution

The Copper Mountain/Sphere end-to-end, MTU VoDSL solution integrates Copper Mountain's CopperEdge(R) 150 DSL Concentrator and CopperRocket(R) 201 Symmetric DSL See DSL.  (SDSL See DSL.

Within buildings, providers connect customers' phone lines to a Sphericall PhoneHub media gateway, which forwards voice traffic in Internet packets across a Local Area Network (LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. ) to a CopperRocket 201. The CopperRocket 201 in turn forwards voice and data traffic to the CopperEdge 150, installed in a building-basement wiring closet. The CopperEdge 150 aggregates and prioritizes voice and data traffic and sends it across the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) to an ATM switch, located in the provider's network operations center See NOC.

Also called a "network management center" (NMC), "service management center" (SMC) or "network control center" (NCC), a NOC may be used to manage a large enterprise network, ). The ATM switch splits the voice and data traffic, forwarding the data traffic to an Internet router and the voice traffic to the Sphericall Softswitch, also located at the NOC. The Softswitch, which provides all the functions of a more expensive Class 5 circuit switch, routes on-net voice traffic to other phones on the customer's LAN, via the ATM switch and the CopperEdge 150 DSL Concentrator, and off-net traffic to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S. ) via a Sphericall COHub at the NOC. Value-added services such as unified messaging, fax, desktop call control, video telephony and attendant features are all part of the solution offering. This allows providers to have competitive differentiators that also are potential revenue sources in one solution. The Copper Mountain/Sphere end-to-end VoDSL solution leverages customers' standard network infrastructure to deliver all the functionality of a high-end PBX system, at significantly lower cost.
